REVIEW RESULTS - SCOTSDALES GARDEN CENTREScotsdales is one of the highest turnover garden centres in the UK and certainly the top one in its region. Before going to the main review below we noted that lots of effort had gone into the planting in front of the main entrance and to the sides at Scotsdales garden centre. Many large garden centres only make a token effort at showing off plants outside their garden centres but this is not the case with Scotsdales.
THE OUTSIDE AREA The area is well arranged with reasonably wide paths which are kept clean and tidy. The plant beds are arranged in short rows which makes it pleasant to walk around. Down one side of the area is a series of different plant rooms each containing a particular group of plants. This encourages customers to wander around which is good for business. Indoor and outdoor information centres are well stocked with books and other relevant information. Prices are competitive with clematis starting at a commendable £7.99 and potentillas at £8.99. Other gardening goods include 75 litre bags of Westland multi-purpose at £5.99 or two for £10, Yeoman economy fork / spade is £12.99 to an amazingly cheap two for £15, a stainless steel Bentley fork / spade costs £24.99. A one litre Tomorite is £3.99 or two for £5 and Miracle Gro is £4.99 for 1kg.
THE PLANTS As far as specialities are concerned, this large garden centre stock a good range of grasses, bamboos, fruit trees and larger specimen plants. They also surprising stock a large number of olive trees in varying sizes. We were impressed by the amount of information on show about the fruit trees - clear details of rootstocks and fruiting times.
INSIDE SCOTSDALES GARDEN CENTRE The pet store is in its own dedicated area and has a huge range of stock including small live pets. The aquatics are provided by Maidenhead Aquatics and this is to the normal high standards. Also on site is a deli store which stocks, jams, chutneys and other similar items. The decor of the interior is better than many garden centres with a covered ceiling and good lighting. It is let down by rather drab flooring which needs to be re-carpeted in places. Aisles are wide and clear. They currently have no club / reward membership scheme at this garden centre.
