CHOOSE GARDEN CENTRES BY COUNTY BELOW
This independent review of Laylocks Garden Centre near Worcester was written by David Marks and was last updated in March 2026.
This is an in depth review by a real human as a result of visiting this garden centre, no Artificial Intelligence is involved. We reviewed the inside and plant sales areas, took pictures (see lower down this article) and checked out the cafe. The cafe check involved ordering and tasting the food and reporting our findings for you to judge.
The name of Laylocks Garden Centre comes from Laylocks Cottage where Martin Warr first started the business in 1973 as a small nursery which quickly established a large number of satisfied customers. Expansion plans in 1981 resulted in the business buying the current new site which allowed for a larger plants area, an interior sales area and a very popular cafe.
Martin Warr's daughter joined the team full time in 2017. By 2020 the garden centre had been expanded considerably whilst still growing 60% of their own plants.

FOOD TYPE: There is a varied menu to suit most tastes with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free items clearly marked. Breakfast service runs from 9.00 (10.00 on Sundays) to 11.30 and lunch from 12.00 to 3.00. The cafe remains open until 4.30 for drinks and cakes.

FOOD QUALITY: We ordered a ham and cheese toastie which was served with chips and a very tasty coleslaw. The food was served hot and because the plate had been warmed, it stayed that way. Lots of ham and cheese with chutney in the toastie, and the chips were excellent.
We also ordered the soup of the day (tomato and red pepper) combined with half a tuna and cumber sandwich. Again, the food tasted very good. Presentation was also commendable.

I did have a chat with a customer who had ordered the Laylocks cheese burger and their opinion was that it was very tasty and filling - it certainly looked that way!
DECOR: The decor is very pleasant, the tables and chairs are plastic but kept very clean. The whole cafe area is very light and airy, well decorated.
OUTDOOR SEATING: The outdoor seating area is in two parts. The first is a neat attractive patio area immediately outside the cafe. The second area is semi-wooded with tables and chairs amongst trees and shrubs. A children's play area is right next to this seating area.
Overall both outside seating areas are excellent for a warm day.

SERVICE: Service was faultless. When you enter the cafe you choose your table and note the number. You then place your order at the service area and your food is served to your table. It took me almost no time to place my order and the meals were delivered to the table in around 10 minutes.
VALUE FOR MONEY: The whole package of good food, served pleasantly and promptly combined with pleasant decor is great value for money.

SIZE OF PLANTS AREA: This is a large plants area.
PLANT SELECTION: There is a good selection of plants, shrubs and small trees at Laylocks Garden Centre and many of them have been grown in their own nursery. This is increasingly becoming more of a rarity nowadays because integrating a large garden centre and a plant nursery is not an easy proposition as afar as profitability is concerned.
The benefits however are huge. Transport costs and pollution are hugely reduced and therefore so are the cost of the plants. And, often overlooked, is that the shrubs and plants have been raised in conditions that are suitable for growing them on in the surrounding area.
LAYOUT: The plants area has a smallish covered area immediately outside the main building with a covered path through the plants area.

The plants are arranged in an attractive fashion with low level plant bays - significant effort has gone into the design of the area. It is a very pleasant area to wander around.
And you will need to wander around if you are searching for a particular plant because the area is almost totally devoid of any signage indicating where plant groups are situated. If you want a particular shrub or climbing plant you will need to search for it or ask - a price well worth paying at this garden centre.
The area is hard paved, has no significant slopes and has paths wide enough for easy access (including wheelchairs) in all areas.
One annoying feature I find at a large number of garden centres is that the trolley for plants / compost etc. are all parked outside the front of the garden centre. If you enter the garden centre and do not collect you trolley before you enter, you will then need to track back through the garden centre to the entrance and collect your trolley and re-enter the garden centre.
Just one of those things which annoys me. But at Laylocks, they keep many of their trolleys in the plants area which entirely avoids this problem.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Prices for plants at Laylocks are definitely on the low side and represent good value for money.
At Laylocks, roses start from £15 (and there is a good selection of healthy roses at that price); clematis start from £15. These relatively low prices are representative of the generally low plant prices throughout at Laylocks.
SIZE: This is a large sales area
LAYOUT: Near the entrance is an area devoted to houseplants. A comprehensive choice of plants which are in excellent condition and attractively displayed.

The rest of the interior sales space has all the items you would expect at a large garden centre, books, cards, barbecues and more. The paths are wide and easy to navigate with solid flooring. One great bonus for us is the total lack of background music, peace while you are browsing!
