St Peters Garden Centre Worcester

This independent review of St Peter's Garden Centre in Worcester was written by David Marks and was last updated in September 2025.

This is an in depth review by a real human as a result of visiting this garden centre, no Artificial Intelligence is involved!

We reviewed the inside and plant sales areas, took pictures (see lower down this article) and checked out the cafe. The cafe check involved ordering and tasting the food and reporting our findings for you to judge.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF ST PETERS GARDEN CENTRE

St Peters Garden Centre began life as a farm which specialised in breeding and rearing pigs. The farm hit hard times in the  1970s and fell into disuse. Tony Blake bought the pig farm in 1978 and established it as a commercial plants nursery in 1982 supplying plants and shrubs to local businesses.

In 1985 Tony and the Blake family added St Peters Garden Centre onto the nursery and developed it slowly but surely over the next 18 years. In 1992 the hard decision was taken to close the nursery - it simply was not financially viable.

The garden centre business thrived and in 1999 a considerable amount of money effort was invested into developing the garden centre on existing land and in preference to the original nursery business. The cafe was expanded as was the car park and the garden centre started to evolve into the modern garden centre that now exists.

This expansion has continued up to the present day. One of the crowning achievements has been the establishment of Blake's Butchers on site and Blake's Farm Shop. More recently Poppy's Farm was opened in 2021 which is a free to visit wildlife area designed for families to enjoy.

CAFE AT ST PETERS GARDEN CENTRE

SIZE: The cafe is large and it has a pleasant covered marquee attached to it (dogs are allowed in the marquee area but not the main cafe).

FOOD TYPE: The Potting Shed at St Peters Garden Centre offers a menu which slightly pricier (but not much more) compared to nearby garden centres. They aim to provide quality meat and ingredients from their own Blake's Butchers and  Farm Shop.

Their menus are similar to many other garden centres although on Sundays their main meals are aimed primarily at those wanting a traditional roast and are far more restricted.

Breakfast is served from 9.00 to 10.45 seven days a week. Lunch and lite bites is served from 11.30 to 3.45 Mondays to Saturdays. On Sundays food is served from 12.00 to 2.15.

The breakfast menu can be found here.

The weekdays and Saturday lunch menu can be found here.

The Sunday lunch menu can be found here.

FOOD QUALITY: As a test I ordered one of their Sausage and Bacon Sarnies (see picture below).

Sausage and Bacon Sandwich at St Peters Garden Centre

The sausage and the bacon were supplied by the on-site Blakes Butchers. It was a delicious sandwich, meaty, tasty and very warm, a true delight with decent bread. I ordered an Americano coffee with it and that was also good.

By chance I began chatting to the lady at the next table to me who had ordered one of the full breakfasts and she was not so impressed with her meal. The poached egg was solid, no runny yolk at all. The grilled tomato was uncooked, simply a sliced uncooked tomato. She took the trouble to show me the two items and it was clear that she was correct.

She called the person who had served her with the meal and he agreed. As fast as was possible she was given two new poached eggs and a new tomato. The poached eggs were perfect and this time the tomato was grilled and warm. From what I could gather she was also offered some sort of refund and she was happy with that.

As she explained to me, people often accept substandard food and she was not prepared to do that. All credit to her, she was a young lady on her own. But also all credit to the staff who corrected the situation as soon as they could without question.

DECOR: The main cafe is a very pleasant place for a meal or a coffee and cake. It is divided up by low level partitions which gives the area a cosy feeling. The tables and chairs are rustic wood and the whole cafe is kept immaculately clean.

Attached to the main cafe is an enclosed and covered marquee. It is light and airy.

I visited around 9.30 on a Saturday morning and the cafe was well over half full and by the time I left it was almost completely full, a very popular eating place and with good reason.

OUTDOOR SEATING: There is also an outside seating area which looked good although the weather was too cold to try it out.

SERVICE: When you enter the cafe area you can either join one short queue for teas, coffees and cakes or wait to be shown to a table for something more substantial. I was taken to a table, chose what I wanted from the menu and then placed my order at the central order station. The process took less than five minutes.

The food arrived at my table about ten minutes later. Very pleasant and prompt service.

VALUE FOR MONEY: Prices in the cafe are slightly higher compared to other nearby garden centre cafes. In my opinion the extra is worth it given the decor, food quality and service.

PLANTS AREA AT ST PETERS GARDEN CENTRE

SIZE OF PLANTS AREA: The plants area is large.

PLANT SELECTION: The choice of plants is excellent, most gardeners will find the plants they want at St Peters Garden Centre. The plants were all in excellent condition and came with a five year hardy plant guarantee. The large signs made it extremely easy to locate particular plant groups.

LAYOUT: A lot of thought and effort gone into the design of the outside area. Compared to the regimented straight lines of plants at many large garden centres, St Peters is a pleasure to wander around.

The outside area can't be described as ideal for a rainy day but approximately 20% is under cover and the main path around the plants is also covered.

There's a path leading from the outside area to Poppy's Farm. We didn't have time to explore it but it looks good fun for kids snd families. Click here to find out more.

LAYOUT: The paths inside are wide, solid and on the level. We were impressed by the signage. In large garden centres it's often difficult to locate specific areas but at St Peters there are plenty of high level signs to keep you on track.
