Frensham is a large garden centre but the emphasis is not on the plants. The outdoor plants area is smaller than you might expect for a garden centre this size but it is well kept and easy to get round even for wheelchair users. Most everyday plants are there including seasonal bedding, shrubs roses and trees. The choice is adequate though uninspiring. The plants themselves are in good condition and hardy plants come with a three year guarantee.

To one side of the plants is a kiddies play area which is well set up, free and provides good amusement for the kids. There is a large man made pond in the outside area, a good place for a picnic on a warm summer day.

The real thrust of this garden centre is the non-gardening departments. The one which stands out is the camping section managed by Camping World. It's all a bit cramped but they pack in a lot equipment into the available area. It is more expensive than you might expect.

The Farm Shop is exceptionally large, they really have gone that extra bit further to provide a huge range of produce. It was officially opened in November 2011. The meat department is run by Michael Humphries who has been in business locally for 30 years and has won several awards. The meat is undeniably expensive but at the same undeniably good, quality always comes at a price.

Cheese features high on the produce for sale in the Food Hall as does deli items, fresh bread, jams, chutneys, pies and snack foods. All these also come at a high price and it's questionable whether they represent the good value that the meat does. However it's all presented superbly.

Other departments include bird care, indoor and outdoor garden furniture, pet accessories, houseplants, gifts, cards, books, barbecues and probably a whole pile more which we cannot remember.

THE FRENSHAM GARDEN CENTRE CAFE

The cafe is smaller than we would have expected for a garden centre of this size with only 30 seats indoors. They have a large outdoor seating area if the weather is good and the view over the plants area and beyond is very pleasant. The quality of the food is consistently good although service can be a bit lacking especially during peak hours.

Value for money can be a bit variable depending on what you choose to eat and drink. The breakfasts (served till 11.00) are most definitely over-priced, especially the regular one at £7.49. But the Frensham Burger at £7.00 is not only delicious but good value. Scampi and chips at £10 is again too expensive but the pasta bake at £6.50 is fairly priced. Overall we would assess the cafe as being more expensive than you would expect for the food quality, service and decor but you are unlikely to be served a bad meal here. The cafe is open from 9.00am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Sundays.

The cafe was awarded a five star food hygiene rating in January 2013 by Waverley Borough Council, click here for more information.

The kids play area is great and the camping display fascinated our two kids.
