CAFE REVIEW

RANGE OF FOOD
The range of food is excellent and includes vegetarian options. Main meals, salads, snack meals, cakes, coffees and teas are all on offer. A more expensive a la carte menu is also offered and from our limited experience it looks very tempting.

QUALITY OF FOOD
We sampled two main meals and two snack meals and can report that the quality of the food is excellent. Top class ingredients and chefs who know how to cook food to perfection. Very unusual for a garden centre cafe / restaurant.

The first main meal was the Hennessy's Burger, see the picture in the right hand column. Eight ounces of top quality beef, minced to the prefect texture and cooked just right with a mega portion of chips and a salad. Not only was the food excellent but the presentation was top class. No exaggeration, this was equivalent to food from a top class restaurant in a city centre.

The second "main meal" was the turkey club sandwich. This might not be your idea of a main meal but this sandwich was certainly worthy of it. Beautiful turkey with salad and lovely bread served with a salad and a side portion of chips. Presentation was again excellent.

One word of advice to the owners of Hennessy's Garden centre cafe, top class chefs come and go, don't let your head chef go, I am sure he deserves a pay rise!

DECOR AND SEATING
The general appearance of the cafe at Hennessy's garden centre is very impressive. A high ceiling with lots of exposed wooden beams and pine clad ceilings. Set in it's own area the cafe looks onto the outdoor seating area and part looks onto the garden centre. Two large skylights let in a large amount of light.

The outdoor seating area is on a two level decking and the furniture is wrought iron. The outlook is onto the main garden centre. A very pleasant are to have a meal or a coffee on a sunny day.

The tables and chairs are a mixture of wood and wrought iron and they are arranged in a pleasant fashion. The whole impression is one of space and a relaxed atmosphere. The main part of the cooking area is in the middle of the cafe. It provides a focal point and assurance that the food preparation is clean.

We can't fault the decor in this cafe / restaurant, it is clearly the result of lots of thought and expense. If it was transposed to the centre of Cork or Dublin it would not look out of place at all.

SERVICE
Service really comprises two parts. First the waiting time to order food - this was minimal. Then the time it takes for the food to be served to your table. When our order was taken for a main meal we were told that food is cooked to order and would take 10 to 15 minutes, this proved to be the case. Given the quality of the food (see above), this was a very acceptable waiting time.

Service was pleasant and courteous. You can see your food being cooked in the central area and the chef delivers it personally to your table. Granted, it is served with a flourish, but then food of this quality is deserving of the method it is served at Hennessy's Garden Centre cafe. We congratulate the serving staff and the chef for the overall way service is achieved.

THE PRICES
The prices are higher compared to normal garden centre cafe food but they are excellent value when the quality and presentation of the food is taken into account.

CONCLUSION
Top quality food presented very attractively in a very pleasing environment. We recommend Hennessy's in Kilkenny very highly.
