REVIEW RESULTS - HENNESSY'S GARDEN CENTRE, KILKENNYHennessy's Garden centre is about 6km from Kilkenny town centre (see here for coordinates) and, by Irish standards, is a large retail outlet serving the gardening community. The road side of the car park has a very interesting flower bed with lots of acers and other more seasonal plants.
THE OUTSIDE AREA Further on is the uncovered plants area which is laid out in a very informal manner. The paths are wide in most places and they are paved making access very easy. The plants themselves are set out in a combination of unattractive metal containers and some more attractive wooden ones. There are no overhead signs at all to indicate where plant types are located, you need to wander around to locate specific plants. This is mot too much of a problem because the plants area is open plan with very few tall displays to restrict your view.
THE PLANTS They had a large and healthy selection of Japanese Maples of varying sizes and prices. They also had a large range of ornamental trees and some of them were unusually tall. Good if you have the money and want a substantial tree instantly. We saw no advertised plant guarantee although this type of guarantee has not yet caught on in Ireland. As far as prices are concerned, roses started at €9.99, clematis (a very good selection) from €9.99, Tomorite 1 litre at €7.99 with a cheaper version at €7.99, 1 kg Miracle Gro was un priced.
INSIDE HENNESSY'S GARDEN CENTRE The rest of the indoor area is given over to gardening goods such as bulbs, chemicals, fertilisers and garden tools. They have an aquatics centre which stocks a small range of fish. Other goodies for sale included lots of bird feeds and accessories, a pet food and accessory area although no live pets. The choice of barbecues and garden furniture was OK. Cards and gifts were sold and there was section selling young kids toys. The area is pleasantly laid out with the ceiling shaded which disguised some of the metal beams. The paths were wide and easy to get round. They currently have no club / reward membership scheme at this garden centre.

OTHER STUFF Hennessy's website have details of their "other" garden centre based in Rosslare. Our investigations indicate that Hennessy's Garden Centre in Rosslare went into liquidation in late 2010. The site appears to be for sale at a price of €150,000. Indeed, when we passed the garden centre in May 2011 there was a For Sale sign outside.
