REVIEW RESULTSSquires Milford Garden Centre does more than sell garden plants and general garden centre goods, it is also home to two National Collections of plants. The show gardens, the setting and the planting surrounding the sales area mark it out as a garden centre which really tries to please. They were bought by Squires Garden Centres in October 2013.
THE OUTSIDE AREA Not only is the main sales area attractive but on the outskirts there are grassed and planted areas to provide a pleasant area to see plants in a natural setting. Many of the plants are helpfully labeled if you want to buy them. The area also has a pleasant pond setting with tables and chairs for a picnic. The kids play area is well laid out and has a very amusing crooked house. The paths are wide and the majority are solidly paved. Some of the minor paths are of reasonably firm gravel. Signs to specific plant areas are clearly displayed and the plants are arranged in alphabetical order. A small area of Squires Milford Garden Centre is given over to Cathie Brooks Garden School. Cathie provides a range of services including on site and distance gardening courses. A great idea for the novice and not so novice gardener.
THE PLANTS Prices for plants and general gardening equipment is about average for a garden centre of this size and in this location. Typical prices include the following: rose plants start from £7.99, potentillas from £8.99, clematis are a rather hefty £12.99 upwards, economy spades and forks are £15.79, stainless steel Fiskar versions cost £29.99. Multi-purpose compost (J Arthur Bowers) is competitively priced at £3.79 for a 56 litre bag or three for £10. Finally 1 kilo of Miracle Gro costs £5.29 and a 1 litre bottle of tomato fertiliser is £4.99.
INSIDE SQUIRES MILFORD GARDEN CENTRE The aisles are wide and easy to get round with many areas being carpeted. In much of the indoor are the ugly metal beams, so unattractive in lots of other garden centres, are boxed in making the area more pleasant. The houseplants section is extensive and offers lots of attractively displayed plants at good prices. When we visited a large choice of home-grown chillies were for sale. They currently have no club / reward membership scheme at this garden centre.
