This independent review of Mappleborough Green Garden Centre was written by David Marks and was last updated in November 2025.
This is an in depth review by a real human as a result of visiting this garden centre, no Artificial Intelligence is involved!
We reviewed the inside and plant sales areas, took pictures (see lower down this article) and checked out the cafe.
Mappleborough Green Garden Centre was built on the grounds of Badger Nurseries. Paul Richards bought the former Badger Nurseries in 2011 with the intention of redeveloping it from a rather run down business and turning it into a thoroughly modern garden centre. Previous to buying Badger Nurseries, Paul sold his Golden Acres Group of garden centres to the now defunct Wyevale Group.
The redevelopment was split into two main phases. During the first phase, Badger Nurseries was renamed to 'Your Local Garden Centre'. When the redevelopment was completed in 2016 the garden centre was rebranded as Mappleborough Green Garden Centre.
Almost all of the site was demolished as part of the redevelopment, being replaced by new modern buildings.
The nature of the garden centre has changed completely from the former Badger Nurseries. All the plants are now bought in with none grown on site. But Mappleborough Green Garden Centre has light and airy interior sales space, a modern 200 seater cafe and full toilet facilities. The garden centre is now more spacious and has been totally redesigned.
PLANTS AREA: A large plants area which satisfies the needs of most gardeners

INTERIOR SALES AREA: A good sized interior sales space which concentrates on gifty items and homeware, possibly at the expense of gardening goods
See lower down this article for a more comprehensive review of the Mappleborough Green Garden Centre interior sales area.
CAFE: Thoroughly modern and attractive 200 seater cafe serving good quality food.

DOG FRIENDLY? Mappleborough Green Garden Centre is almost totally dog friendly. I say 'almost' totally dog friendly because dogs are not permitted in the main cafe. There is however an attractive seating area for dog owners to one side of the cafe and it is fully covered. It might get a bit chilly in winter but you and your pet will not get wet!

Normal, sensible rules for keeping your dog under control are shown in the dog policy below.

Dog policy at Mappleborough Green Garden Centre
What I found rather unusual about this garden centre was that I saw not even one dog in the building. None in the dog friendly cafe area and none in any other area.

View of Mappleborough Green Garden Centre cafe
FOOD TYPE: The cafe at Mappleborough Green Garden Centre serves a full range of drinks, snacks, light meals, breakfasts as well as main meals. The latest menu we have (November 2025) can be found here.
Breakfasts are served from 9.00 to 11.30 Monday to Saturday and 10.00 to 11.00 on Sunday.
Main meals are served from 12.00pm to 4.00pm Monday to Saturday and 12.00pm to 3.00pm on Sunday.
FOOD QUALITY: We will be visiting the cafe again soon but from our limited experience the food quality is good. Certainly the cafe is crowded at peak times, a sure reflection that people are happy with the food on offer.
DECOR: The cafe is set in its own dedicated area and the furnishings look good quality. The cafe is light and airy with a clean and fresh appearance. All in all a very pleasant area for a meal or coffee and a cake.
OUTDOOR SEATING: There is a small outdoor seating area.
SERVICE: Snacks, drinks and some main meals are served from the main counter. Some main meals are served to our table. There is almost no queuing to place your order and meals are served promptly to your table.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Prices are about average for this type of garden centre. Combined with food quality and general atmosphere we rate the value for money to be well above average.

SIZE OF PLANTS AREA: The plants area is medium to large.
PLANT SELECTION: There is a good selection of plants in excellent condition. No plants are grown at this garden centre. Most gardeners will find choice acceptable.
LAYOUT: All the paths are wide with solid surfaces making getting round an easy task. Key plant groups (e.g. shrubs, climbers) have high level and easily readable signs which makes locating them very easy.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Average.
SIZE: Medium to large. Slightly low on gardening goods, more biased to homeware and gifts. Good women's clothing section and a fair selection of houseplants.
LAYOUT: Pleasant and clean layout. Wide and level aisles.
VALUE FOR MONEY: Average
Christmas is celebrated at Mappleborough Green Garden Centre with a reasonable selection of trees, gifts and decorations. The displays could be arranged to provide more interest though.
ACCESS: Excellent all round.
FACILITIES: Whilst we we wandering round this garden centre the live music entertainment advertised for some afternoons looked interesting, something different for a garden centre.
