OPENING HOURS:Castle Nurseries are primarily committed to offering a large range of plants at rock bottom prices. This has proved to be an extremely successful formula over the years attracting huge numbers of customers from the Redditch area.
The site has also expanded to include a deli cafe and a fruit and vegetable market inside the plant nursery.
This is a true working plants nursery and not only do they grow plants for sale to the public but they have a wholesale facility which operates from the Birmingham Wholesale Market. They have no pretensions at this nursery, the decor is very basic and the layout simple - reassuring in times when many garden centres look like airport lounges!
The paths are partly concrete and partly gravel, beware the odd puddle or two on rainy days. The paths are passably wide and we saw several wheelchair users navigating most of the area with success.
Prices are the best of all the garden centres in this area, a 75 litre bag of multi-purpose compost costs just £3.99 or three bags for £11, clematis start at £5.25, roses start at £6.99.
The main covered area consists three very large greenhouse which house the more tender plants. When is season, the display of bedding plants is massive and very colourful. They also sell vegetable starter plants and lots of them. All the plants are in tip top condition, well looked after and well watered. They have very frequent bargain offers and even these plants were in good condition.
Outside in the open, the shrubs, roses, climbers, trees etc. are on display. They stock a good choice and all look to be in very good condition.
Just outside the main entrance there is a good display of garden buildings, sheds and conservatories. It's not clear to us if they are part of Castle Nurseries or not but it all adds to the range of goods on offer at this site.
If you are looking for a garden shed it will be worth your while reading the reviews on this website. They are independent of any of the manufacturers and their reviews are clearly from first hand experience.
They appear to have no particular axe to grind and the amount of information they give on prices, construction quality, dimensions and more helped us considerably.
At the front end of the plants nursery, as you enter, is a fruit and vegetable market which attracts considerable local interest. The quality is high and the prices are rock bottom. Other items for sale include lots of bird food and accessories, pots, planters and all the gardening composts, pesticides and equipment that most gardeners will ever need.
Just behind Castle Nurseries is the New Country Deli. This is a large cafe restaurant and we wish we had the time to sample their food but unfortunately we didn't. What we can tell you though is that it has two conservatory seating areas plus the main seating area. It all looked very attractive, light and airy. For a change they they provide table cloths and napkins and all the cutlery and china ware looks good.
Quite clearly the food being served here is of very good quality because the place is absolutely packed out, the best recommendation any eating place can have.
Castle Nurseries have captured the market if value for money plants, fruit and vegetables are what you after. Even though the place is packed out the staff are plentiful and more than willing to give you advice. Our only criticism is that their success has led to some congestion in the already packed car park - this aspect is as a result of the popularity of the nursery.
Other garden centres within a mile of Castle Nurseries include Studley Garden Centre and Badger Garden Centre.
