Reasons for Growing Broad Beans in the UK

Growing broad beans has several advantages over other vegetables for the amateur gardener in the UK. In summary these are:

  1. They require minimal care when they have been planted - a true beginners crop

  2. They suffer from few pests and diseases

  3. They are highly nutritious in protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals

  4. They produce their initial crop earlier in the year than many other vegetables

  5. They freeze exceptionally well and remain tasty for several months

  6. They can easily be stored as dried beans (commonly known as fava beans) for several months / years.

  7. They are a crop which has been proven all over the world to be an excellent source of food for more than a thousand years

  8. Served on their own as a vegetable accompaniment to a meal, they are very tasty. They can also be added in smaller amounts to a huge number of other recipes. They add taste, texture and bulk
