CHOOSE GARDEN CENTRES BY COUNTY BELOW
This independent review of Twenty Pence Garden Centre was written by David Marks and was last updated in November 2025. This is an in depth review by a real human as a result of visiting this garden centre, no Artificial Intelligence is involved! We reviewed the inside and plant sales areas, took pictures (see lower down this article) and checked out the cafe.
In 1989 John Seppings set up a farm shop to sell fruit and plants grown in the village of Wilburton by his family. John was a "bright" lad and very soon saw the potential to develop the farm shop into a garden centre. At that time garden centre businesses were developing at a rapid rate throughout the UK.
In 1991 planning permission was granted to develop the site into a more substantial garden centre, and this is when the Twenty Pence garden centre was established. It has remained in the Seppings family from that point to now.
The garden centre name "Twenty Pence" is the same as the road it is situated on and the former (?) Twenty Pence Inn. The Inn probably doesn't exist any more, but it did in the past - see here. There are various other theories about the name, for one of them see here.

Main meals are displayed on the hot counter and the cooking area is open to view. As well as main meals, snacks, teas and coffees are served throughout the day. The cafe can seat up to 200 people.

Having wandered around this garden centre we were stuck by the small percentage of space given over to the plants area, a lot smaller than most of the garden centres we have visited. The bought in plants are in good condition and reasonably well displayed. The choice of plants is relatively small so you may not always find the particular vairety you are looking for.
Hardy shrubs are covered by a five year guarantee. Around the outdoor area you will also find a range of garden sheds, greenhouses, fencing and paving.
The interior sales area is particularly large for a garden centre of this overall size. like many larger garden centres, Twenty Pence not only stock garden accessories but also garden furniture, clothes, books, cards and lots of gift items. They have a good choice of feeds and accessories for feeding your garden birds.
ACCESS: Good all round. Wheelchair users will have little or no problems accessing all areas of this garden centre. Toilets for the disabled are present as are special car parking spaces for the disabled near the entrance.
