It's possible to trace the history of St John's Garden Centre Ashford back to when it was owned by the now defunct Wyevale Group.
In October 2018 Wyevale sold the freehold of the garden centre to St John's for exactly £1,000,000. St John's was privately owned by the Oliver family who had operated the business for nearly 70 years.
In March 2024 St John's was sold to Jason Mellett (former account manager) and Mark Toon (former landscape manager), both employed by St John's.
St John's Ashford is partially dog friendly. Dogs on leads are allowed in the garden centre but not in the inside cafe. Dogs are allowed in the cafe outdoor seating area but be aware that this is not a covered area so if it is raining, you and your dog will get wet (and possibly cold!).
As you go in through the entrance you enter the covered plants area which houses tender plants and some other goods. It's very attractively laid out, light and airy and big for a covered area.
The main uncovered plants area is smaller than you might think in comparison to the covered sales area. It's well laid out with solid paths.
There are a few slight gradients at this garden centre although they are mostly gentle although the car park is on a significant slope. There are no large plant signs to locate plant groups, not really a problem in a plants area of this size. St John's Ashford stock all the common varieties of plants and do particularly well with larger plants and evergreens. A large choice of pots and planters is also available.
As well as plants the outside area also stocks a surprisingly large choice of greenhouses, sheds, garden building and stoneware.
Prices appear very reasonable at this garden centre.
The interior sales area is large and they stock all the gardening tools, pesticides, fertilisers and other gardening necessities. Because the interior space is large they also sell lots of non-gardening goods such as cards, gifts, clothes, barbecues etc.
They major on garden furniture and conservatory furniture, a comprehensive Pet Shop (no live pets) and a camping and outdoor shop (open Easter to October only).
We didn't get a chance to sample the food at the cafe but we did take a look inside it. It's light and airy, attractively designed with wooden table and chairs. There are indoor and outdoor seating areas with the views from the outdoor area being really spectacular.
