Syon Park garden centre was opened in 1968 by HM Queen Elizabeth II and hailed by some at the time as the start of garden centres in the UK. This was a slight exaggeration because the idea of selling potted plants en masse had been discovered by several other years before.
The main thrust of this branch of Wyevale Garden Centres seems to be selling top quality but high end (pricewise) plants in an historic setting. One example of this is the David Austen rose display which is undeniably impressive but rather than selling individual roses at £7.00 or so they sell them priced well into double figure mark.
This is not really the best place for the average gardener to shop but there are some definite positives. One of which is the nearby aquatics centre run by the well known Maidenhead Aquatics. Immaculately kept and stocking a large choice of fish and aquatics accessories.
The garden centre became famous for a week or so when they opened up on Easter Sunday. Normally garden centres are not permitted to open up on that day of the year by law but they got round this by extending the opening to only their Wyevale Garden Centres club members. In addition no one was permitted to buy anything. The whole occasion became further controversial when access to the toilets was restricted! Hailed as a success by Wyevale Garden Centres it was in fact a damp squib - after all, who visits a garden centre on one of the two days in the year when no purchases are allowed.
