Rocky Mountain Nurseries is worth visiting if only for the views. Situated high in the Mendip Hills they have superb views of the surrounding country side. This is a real working nursery where the majority of plants are raised on site.
Not only that but they grow most plants either outside or in unheated greenhouses. The benefits of this is that the plants you buy are unlikely to suffer any shock when you plant them in your garden.
They specialise in several plants including fuchsias, pelargoniums, basket and container plants, vegetable starter plants. The choice of these plants is truly massive!
The choice of fruit trees and roses however is even larger, probably the largest we have ever seen. Alongside these specialist areas they sell a wide range of shrubs, evergreens, ferns, herbaceous and alpine plants.
The plants are all top quality and at very competitive prices. Two examples of the very low prices are roses starting at £4.95 and potentillas from £3.50. The gardening sundries are also very competitively priced, one example is a 56litre bag of potting compost at only £2.99.
Prices are kept very low at the Rocky Mountain Nursery by displaying the majority of the plants on the ground rather than in raised plant bays. This is a working nursery and that's part of their charm.
This is not a garden centre for wheelchair users however. The paths are very uneven and there are significant slopes.

Alongside their plants there is the Rocky Cake cafe. Main meal specials come in at a good £7 given the quality of the food. Breakfasts are served from 9.00 to 12.00 and they are rightly well respected by the locals. Snack meals include a good choice of baked potatoes, sandwiches, baguettes and paninis. And of course they serve an excellent range of cakes, pastries, teas and coffees.
The cafe was awarded the top five star rating for food hygiene in October 2012 by Mendip District Council. Click here for more details.
The gardening shop is modest but stocks all the gardening accessories that most gardeners will need.
