Otter Nurseries started out in 1963 when the owners started a small nursery on the current site. Demand far outstripped their ability to grow plants on the small site so they expanded it more and more over the years. Now, they have the large nursery  / garden centre at Ottery St Mary and four other sites at Plymouth, Torquay, Wincanton and Lymington.

OUR OPINION OF OTTER NURSERIES

The range of plants is enormous, bedding plants in season, hanging baskets, shrubs, roses, herbaceous plants, alpines, ornamental and fruit trees - in truth, you'll find almost every plant you want at Otter Nurseries.

Alongside the sales area they have a huge expanse of land to grow their own plants. They also grow more plants at their other sites. So, these majority of the plants for sale haven't been transported in from some far flung destination in Europe, they've been grown right here in Devon. All hardy plants carry a two year guarantee reflecting the confidence that Otter nurseries have in their plants.

Alongside plants the outside area has separate sales areas for patios, timber and fencing, a good display of greenhouses and sheds, pots and garden statues. Lots of water features are also well displayed.

THE INTERIOR SALES
It's massive, that's the only way to describe it! Not only is every imaginable gardening accessory for sale but the also stock clothes, cards, gifts, gifts, books, music - the list is endless.

If garden furniture interests you they have over 150 displays, the largest selection we have seen for a long time. The aquatics department also deserves special mention, it stocks fish of all kind plus tanks and other accessories. If you are starting out with a pond then you'll find all the liners and materials to construct it at Otter Nurseries.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
Lots of thought has gone into making wheelchair access easy, no harsh slopes, wide paths and solid surfaces make almost all areas accessible to wheelchair users. Wheelchairs are available at the front door.

CAFE AT OTTER NURSERIES
The cafe is large with plenty of seating. The design though is rather lacking in inspiration, rather like a works canteen.

You order your food at the counter and any hot food will be served to your table. Queuing is minimal so it seems to work well. The food is of good quality and it really does seem to be homemade. Portion sizes are excellent.

The serve a choice of four main meal specials which change frequently. They also have a range of lighter meals such as sandwiches, baguettes, salads and baked potatoes. Coffee, tea and lots of delicious homemade cakes are also available. Prices are about average for a garden centre restaurant but the quality of the food is definitely above average.
