The last two winters have seen large numbers of so called hardy plants severely damaged or killed by the cold.

In some cases it is not so much the absolute temperature which has caused the most damage, rather it is the huge temperature drops in very small time frames which has caused the damage.

The cold winters are a potential problem for the many garden centres which offer hardy plant guarantees. Common, previously thought hardy, plants which have suffered most include Photina "Red Robin" (including the dwarf form), Hebe, Cistus, Skimmia, Laurels and Magnolia to name but a few.

The horticultural industry is attempting to revise the current classification of hardy plants, introducing a seven level scale of hardiness.
