CHOOSE GARDEN CENTRES BY COUNTY BELOW
This independent review of West Somerset Garden Centre was written by David Marks and was last updated in November 2025.
This is an in depth review by a real human as a result of visiting this garden centre, no Artificial Intelligence is involved! We reviewed the inside and plant sales areas, took pictures (see lower down this article) and checked out the cafe. The cafe check involved ordering and tasting the food and reporting our findings for you to judge.
West Somerset Garden Centre started out in 1978 as a forestry and landscaping business. The garden centre came into existence by accident rather than intention. After one landscaping job the owners had some plants left over so they potted them up and put them up for sale and sell they did!
The next step was to obtain an 8ft by 6ft summehouse to grow more plants and that went well - and one thing led to another. The garden centre expanded to its current 6,000 sq. ft. of sales space. West Somerset
As at the time of this update, West Somerset Garden Centre is up for sale.
West Somerset Garden Centre is definitely not dog friendly. Only assistance / support dogs are permitted in the garden centre.

Good quality home made food. Wide selection for a cafe of this size. Quick and pleasant service. Pleasant and friendly atmosphere, clearly popular with the locals.
The cafe serves a full range of food including a choice of main meal specials. Breakfasts, from a full English breakfast to a range of baps and less substantial meals, are served in the morning.
Paninis, baked potatoes with a range of fillings, salads, sandwiches and other snack meals are also available. Coffees, teas and cakes are served all day and these looked to be very popular when we visited.
QUALITY OF FOOD
The quality of the food is very good. we sampled a Gardener's Breakfast and a main meal. There's no doubt about it, this is
homemade food cooked to a high standard. Presentation was also good.

DECOR AND SEATING
There are around ten tables in this cafe with the furniture being plain wood. The cafe is in its own dedicated area and the general
decor is above average. Our only comment is that the roof is exposed with ugly metal beams. As well as the interior seating area there is
a decked patio outside for sunny days.
SERVICE
The cafe was nearly full when we visited but the service was fast and efficient. Main cooked meals are delivered to your table by
pleasant staff, other food is served directly form the counter.
THE PRICES
Main meals at
their highest at £10, baked potatoes with
fillings from £6 to £8. These prices represent very good
value for money especially when the good quality of the food is taken into account.
CONCLUSION
A smallish cafe serving a good choice of homemade food in a pleasant environment. We were impressed overall.
The plants area is medium to large-sized for a UK garden centre and it is has two separate area. The covered area (about a quarter of the total area) houses tender plants and some gardening goods, it is fully paved.
The larger uncovered area is mainly gravel but it is well-compacted so it is fine for wheelchair access. The paths are not the widest we have seen but they still provide easy access around the plants area. There are large, easy to see signs to all the major plant groupings and the individual plant signs and labels contain helpful information. The planting instructions for the plant groups were particularly useful.
Plants are held in small bays which gives the area an interesting appearance. Centre displays, statues and pergolas all add further interest. We thought the use of trellis backing to the plants bays was particularly good, it broke up the area well. The plants themselves were clearly well cared for although there is no plant guarantee offered at this garden centre. The range of plants was good, you will find all the old favourites here but as well, you will find some additional, rather unusual plant varieties.
The bedding plants are grown on site as are many the trees and shrubs. Home grown plants always fare better when planted in the surrounding locality. Prices are average, you are unlikely to find many bargains at the West Somerset Garden Centre, but neither will you be charged over the odds.
ACCESS: Good all round, wheelchairs are available at the door.
