Mount Folly Nurseries was started by Graham and Angela Cowles back in 1985 and originally concentrated on propagating and growing their own hardy plants. Two serious weather events in 1987 and 1990 caused such damage to the plants that they decided to change direction and concentrated on growing bedding plants.
They embarked on an ambitious expansion plan and built heated greenhouses which now extend to over 100,000sq ft. Just over 85% of the plants they sell are propagated on site from their own stock.
Without a doubt the main reason to visit Mount Folly Nurseries is to view and buy their bedding and hanging baskets. They do a range of young fruit trees, perennials and shrubs but it's plants like fuchsias, geraniums, lobelia, petunias which dominate the sales area. In April to June it's worth a visit just to see the massed display of colourful plants in their extensive greenhouses.
