DOG FRIENDLY?
Gordale claim their garden centre is
dog friendly but that is not the true story! Firstly, dogs are not allowed
in the coffee shop or the Food Hall.
Secondly, dogs must be placed and remain in one of Gordale's shopping trolleys at all times. No, that's not a joke, it's on their website!
OVERALL IMPRESSION
THE OUTSIDE AREA
The plants area has a large covered part to it which houses tender
and seasonal plants. Walk through that and you are in the main plant
sales area. It is well set out with lots of interesting features and
an engaging layout. Clearly lots of design effort has been applied
to this area and with good results. We particularly liked the high
hedge which divided the area and the arch way through it. The wooden
slats above the walkways provide little protection against rain but
are an attractive feature in their own right.
The paths are wide, level, well kept and free from obstructions. It's easy to locate plants because the signs in the plants area are large and informative. The information centre in the plants area is useful with lots of documentation. The shrubs are very clearly set out in alphabetic order making plants easy to find.
Kids are well looked after with a dedicated play area, slides and climbing frames. There were two areas for picnics.
THE PLANTS AT GORDALE GARDEN CENTRE
The average gardener will find all the plants they need at the
Gordale Garden Centre and much more. One of their specialities is
ornamental trees, with one of the largest selections of Japanese
Maples we have ever seen. These were in excellent condition and many
specimens were mature pots plants of 1 to 2 meters high, very
impressive. Other particularly well represented plants were climbers
(including a huge number of clematis), grasses, fruit trees and
roses.
VIDEO TAKEN OF GORDALE GARDEN CENTRE
This video was taken by JustGardenCentres in April and
shows some features of the outdoor plant sales area at
Gordale Garden Centre.
The quality of the plants was very high, healthy well-watered and weed free. This is further backed up by a five year hardy plant guarantee.
We will update with prices when we next visit.
INSIDE GORDALE GARDEN CENTRE
The indoor sales area is large, with a high ceiling. The paths are
wide and easily navigable, even carpeted in some places. The range
of goods includes all the gardening accessories you would expect
plus lots of books, gifts, food and delicatessen items, bird feeds
and accessories - everything you would expect from a large garden
centre. They even have a first floor area which dedicated to
conservatory furniture and general home ware items.
We liked the large display of houseplants which were in good condition and fairly priced.
Gordale Garden Centre have their own club card scheme with various benefits for their members. Details of the club and a comparison with the clubs of other garden centres can be found by clicking here. If you are thinking of visiting this garden centre to make a purchase it may well be worth taking a look at their discounts and rewards.
DISABLED ACCESS
Access for wheelchairs was good all round this garden centre. The
interior sales area had a few very minor slopes but nothing that
would bother a wheelchair user.
OTHER STUFF
Car park - More than large enough and on even ground near to
the main entrance
Pet Centre - We saw none
Aquatics - We saw none
Water Features - yes, a good choice and well-displayed
Sheds and Greenhouses - There was a display of conservatories
but we saw no sheds or greenhouses for sale.
Toilets - Clean and functional just off the cafe area.

RANGE OF FOOD
Lots of food is on offer at this cafe. Two or three main specials
are on offer as well as other savoury substantial snacks such as
pasties and pastries. The normal range of snacks are available as
well as teas, coffees and cakes.
QUALITY OF FOOD
For the price, the quality of the food is good. We liked the way the
cooking area was visible from the upper seating area. It shows
confidence in the quality of the food and the preparation of it. The
quiches are a speciality and we can thoroughly recommend them.
DECOR AND SEATING
The cafe is self-contained. This shows because
it is all clean and modern-looking.
The tables and chairs are of the basic plastic type although they
looked fine. The cafe has a main area surrounded by a slightly
higher seating area which gave the area a pleasant feel to it. The
ceiling covers the metal beams so often found in other garden
centres which also adds to the pleasing appearance of the area. The
area is kept very clean and tables are cleared promptly.
At one end of the cafe there are large windows which look out onto the outdoor seating area which in turn looks onto the outdoor garden centre. This gives the cafe a light and airy feel to it.
SERVICE
Service was excellent with almost no wait even at lunch time. Most
of the hot food is served to your table by pleasant staff.
THE PRICES
No menu is available online, we will provide example prices after
our nextt visit
CONCLUSION
A modern cafe serving a large range of good quality food in pleasant
surroundings. We recommend a visit.
