4 MAY 2012

The wet weather in April has caused garden centre sales figures to be 35% lower compared to April 2011.

Not only are the April figures very disappointing but the predicted cold Bank Holiday in early May is very worrying not only for garden centres but also for growers. Garden centres and nurseries are thinking very carefully before placing more orders for bedding plants with frosts and very cold weather predicted for the next week.

Overall this year sales are also down by about 7% so the good March figures have now been wiped out completely. Worst hit were plant sales but barbecue an garden furniture sales were also heavily down. Clouds always have a silver lining though, water butt sales have increased massively in 2012 as has fencing. Garden centre cafes and restaurants also seem to be immune from the bad weather.
