REVIEW RESULTS

BACKGROUND
The Swindon Garden Centre was originally a smallish nursery. It was bought by Wyevale and converted to medium to large fully fledged garden centre. Wyevale have now changed their name to Wyevale Garden Centres and renamed all their garden centres.

THE PLANTS AREA AT SWINDON GARDEN CENTRE
The plants area is partially covered with about 80% open to the rain. The plants are principally laid out in boring rows which do not provide any interest or inspiration. There were however lots of clear large signs indicating where specific types of plants are located. Individual plant information was also reasonably good.

The area is kept clean with wide unobstructed paths allowing easy access.

THE PLANTS

All the common shrubs, trees and other plants are likely to be found at the Swindon Garden Centre. They don't have any specialities here but there was certainly a good selection of roses.

There was also a reasonable collection of fruit and ornamental trees. All the plants were in excellent condition, watered well and weed free.

A VIDEO OF SWINDON GARDEN CENTRE

INSIDE SWINDON GARDEN CENTRE
Exposed metal ceiling beams throughout give the Swindon Garden Centre a very basic appearance. They stock lots of gardening goods, tools, feeds, insecticides, seeds, the full range you would expect from a medium to large sized garden centre.

They also display a good selection of garden furniture, barbecues and other garden related goodies. There is a smallish offering of books, cards, clothing and other non-gardening goods.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
Swindon Garden centre is definitely wheelchair user friendly. Wide paths which are kept clutter-free both inside and out.

CAFE AT SWINDON GARDEN CENTRE
The cafe is in a purpose built area with seating only indoors. The tables and chairs are arranged in three long rows which give it a rather regimented look. The decor is pleasant and minimal. The whole cafe area at the Swindon Garden Centre is very clean and tidy.

The main and light lunches (available from 12 onwards) were all around the 7 price. In common with other Wyevale Garden Centres cafes the food is now prepared on the premises. It tasted very good and the menu was imaginative. For example the warm chorizo and black pudding salad was a delight.

Breakfasts are served up to 11.30 with egg, bacon, sausage, mushrooms and baked beans costing 3.99. The bumper 6.99 breakfast was massive! Snacks such as paninis (6.49), sandwiches (around 3.50) and baked potatoes (5 to 6) are good value.

Service is prompt and courteous with much of the hot food being served to your table. Main and snack meals are not on display, they are served from the kitchen area. The cafe is licensed to sell wines and beers but these are rather expensive.

PRICES AT SWINDON GARDEN CENTRE

Our admittedly limited spot check on prices at the Swindon Garden Centre indicated that they are the same as others in Wyevale Garden Centres chain. The cheapest rose we found was 6.99, clematis started at 8.99. John Arthur Bowyers compost was 4.99 per 60 litre bag or 3 bags for 12. The cheapest spade was a Yeoman at 12.99, Miracle Go costs 4.99 and a 1 litre Tomorite costs 3.99. All about average or slightly higher compared to some of the competition in the area.

STAR RATINGS SWINDON GARDEN CENTRE

We rate different aspects of each garden centre and then give an overall rating. We adjust the ratings for garden centre size and purpose. So for example a small nursery which is average compared to other small nurseries will be awarded two and half stars. A large garden centre which is average compared to other large garden centres will also be awarded two and a half stars.

Note that the price ratings below is based on a limited range of sample prices.

OTHER STUFF
Car park - There was lots of car park spaces all on flat well drained ground close to the entrance..

Pet Centre - There was a large purpose built pet section at the Swindon Garden Centre which sold a very large range of pet accessories and feeds. No live animals are sold.

Aquatics - Maidenhead Aquatics are on site and they stock an excellent range of all types of fish. Tanks, fish food and a wide range of aquatic accessories are also for sale.

Water Features - There was a medium sized range of water features, supplied by Maidenhead Aquatics.

Sheds and Greenhouses - The range of sheds was limited and mainly of the plastic type. We saw no greenhouses for sale when we visited.

House Plants - Swindon Garden centre have a large stock of houseplants which are displayed very well. The plants were all healthy.

Wheelchair Access - This garden centre has been designed with wheelchair users in mind. Lots of good access all round.

Toilets - Clean and functional with ladies, gents and disabled facilities. Beware though the innocuous looking hand dryers, they emit a noise that has all the volume of a jet plane taking off!
