REVIEW RESULTS - SANDERS GARDEN WORLD
When we visited this garden centre in February they had recently
suffered some severe weather and had taken many of the outdoor
plants away to protect them. Hence the lack of pictures of the
outdoor area because it would have given a false impression. This
did not stop us doing the review below however, we simply judged the
plants which were present and took the bad weather into account.
Previously an independent garden centre, Sanders Garden World was
purchased by Wyevale (now Wyevale Garden Centres) in 2007.
THE OUTSIDE AREA
The outside area is large by any standards
and it is also well kept and tidy. The paths are very wide as are
the very clear overhead signs leading you to plant types. Shrubs are
arranged in alphabetic order making it easy to locate a specific
If you need any help selecting plants there were a reasonable number
of staff in the outside area to assist. There is a good Information
Centre in the centre of the areas with horticultural books and other
There is a small part of the outside area which is covered however
all the main pathways are also covered - excellent for wet
weather shopping! The arrangement of the outside area is interesting
with a large set of fountains in the central area. To one side is a
large children's play area with the original pirate ship.
The plants we saw all looked well kept and the top end five year
hardy plant guarantee is testimony to the confidence Wyevale have in
their plants. The range of plants for sale was large so you should
be able to find most plants here.
The specialities include a very large selection of ornamental trees, lots of
grasses, a good range of fruit trees and a special area set aside
for rhododendrons and camellias.
Example prices include compost at £4.99 for 60 litres or three bags
for £12, the cheapest spade was £12.99 with the stainless steel ones
INSIDE SANDERS GARDEN WORLD
The main interior sales are is large and arranged mainly in a
circle. The whole area is open plan and although the ceiling is is a
boring but imposing mass of grey and girders the overall impression
is very pleasant. The design is open plan so it's easy to make your
way round the area. Access for wheelchairs is generally very good
with only a few areas having small access paths. The floors are
solid and level.
All the normal gardening needs are met more than adequately and
there is lots of non-gardening goods for sale. This includes
clothes, shoes, books, floristry, gifts, cards, some food items,
indoor and outdoor furniture, barbecues - lots for shoppers to
For bird lovers the range of tables, feeds and general accessories
is excellent. Houseplants have not been forgotten, lots of different
ones, including bonsai trees and at very good prices, significantly
cheaper than other garden centres we have visited. The display of
the houseplants is poor but the cheap prices make up for that.
Sanders Garden World have their own club card scheme (Wyevale Garden Centres scheme) with various benefits for their members. Details of
the club and a comparison with the clubs of other garden centres can
be found by
clicking here. If you are thinking of visiting this garden
centre to make a purchase it may well be worth taking a look at
their discounts and rewards.
Good both inside and outside with free wheelchairs at the entrance
if you require.
OTHER STUFF Car park - Immediately next to the entrance, lots of spaces
and on level well drained ground. Pet Centre - No live pets and limited pet accessories and
feeds. Aquatics - Maidenhead Aquatics run the aquatics shop at
Sanders Garden World. It is one of their larger shops and stocks an
excellent range of fish, tanks, feeds, everything for the aquatics
devotee. Water Features - None at the time of our visit but this may
change in the summer Sheds and Greenhouses - A fair selection Toilets - These were modern looking but in need of a clean at
the time we visited.

CAFE REVIEW AT SANDERS GARDEN WORLD
Prices were reasonable given the food quality and portion sizes.
Some example prices are pizza £7 to £7.50, large portion of fish and
chips £7.50, jacket potatoes £5 to £6, toasted sandwiches £6.50
penne pasta £5, soup / croutons / bread £4 and main meals
RANGE OF FOOD
Snacks, cram teas, main meals, salads and lots of other food is on
sale at the cafe in Sanders Garden World. Almost all tastes are
well-catered for. Breakfast is served up to 11.30 and costs around
£6 including tea or coffee,
QUALITY OF FOOD
The quality of the food was good with large portion sizes. We were
particularly impressed by the coffee which is made from a proper
coffee machine (see pictures).
DECOR AND SEATING
The decor was nothing special with mainly plastic tables and chairs.
These are lined up in regimented rows, definitely not the best use
of space. The walls of the sun lounge area are half height brick
which is attractive but spoilt by the rather shoddy upper half. At
one end of this seating area is a collection of large evergreen
shrubs which look good.
There are two other seating areas with the sun lounge area being by
far the best of the two. There is also a third small seating area
Service was courteous and quick even at peak times.

When my kids get bored I take time to this garden centre. They
play in the kids area and I can still see them from the coffee lounge. I have
tried a meal two times but the prices are too high for the food served. Also at
lunch time it can get very busy.
