There has been a "garden centre" at the current site from 1981, the first one being a simple stall selling fruit and vegetables. The owners realised that there was considerable potential in developing the business and over the next 20 years set about expanding the garden centre.

In 2002 the owners sold the business to Country Homes and Gardens. In line with their portfolio of garden centres the expansion continued until in 2011 the business was acquired by Wyevale Garden Centres. Their first task was to expand and renovate the cafe.

Royston Garden Centre stock a fair range of plants trees and shrubs with hardy plants benefitting form a life time guarantee. Many of the plants sold are grown in the UK by Wyevale Garden Centres. The outside area is on a solid surface with no problems getting around the area. large signs indicate where various plant groups are located.

The inside sales area houses a Pets Corner shop and a good sized aquatics centre. A larger than expected area is devoted to clothes with Yeomans, Cotton Traders and The Edinburgh Woollen having their own separate sales areas. The display of garden and conservatory is good for a garden centre of this size and they are attractively set out.

The Garden Cafe is of the normal high standard for Wyevale Garden Centres with food being cooked on site. They serve breakfasts, main meals and lots of other food. The quality is good and the prices average. The layout of the cafe area is plain but functional.
