REVIEW RESULTS - POLHILL COTON ORCHARD

Polhill garden centre at Coton Orchard is set amongst fields of fruit trees, a very pleasant and tranquil area. See also our review of the Polhill Garden Centre in Sevenoaks.

THE OUTSIDE AREA
The covered part of the plant area is split into two providing about 20% of protection against rain. The overall impression of the area is one of spaciousness and a relaxed atmosphere. The plant bays are attractively arranged with a couple of centre pieces to break up the display.

Not many garden centres have the knowledge or time to provide a real planted area but at Polhill they have done exactly this using a large raised bed. It's impressive to see real planting in a garden centre rather than just rows upon rows of potted plants.

The paths are wide and kept commendably clear and clean, more than enough room for wheelchair access. The surface of the paths is predominantly tarmac and although there are two small sets of stirs in the area there is also side access via a shallow side-ramp.

Even though the area is not huge we found the lack of large signs made it difficult to locate particular plants. yes there were signs but only really visible visible when you were near them. And the plant groupings were sometimes a bit unusual with, for example, weigela, hebe, hibiscus, lavender, budleia, lavatera and fuchsias being grouped together away from the main shrubs. Plants within groups however were in alphabetical order.

THE PLANTS
Polhill is a large garden centre and they have a large selection of plants on offer. The only particular speciality we noticed were and an excellent choice of herbaceous plants. The plants were in very good condition and hardy plants come with a two year guarantee.

As far as prices are concerned clematis start at £8.99, potentillas at £5.99 and roses at £7.99,, overall good prices for healthy plants like these. An economy Yeoman spade / fork costs £12.99 with a stainless steel version at £32.99. A 1 litre Tomorite costs £4.29 and a 50 litre bag of Levington's multi-purposes costs £5.99 or two for £10 - slightly pricey given the smallish size of the bag.

INSIDE POLHILL COTON ORCHARD GARDEN CENTRE
The interior is reasonably standard although the aisles are wider than in many garden centres giving a spacious appearance. Gifts, books, children's toys, cards, barbecues, garden furniture, a large clothing section, bird food, tables and a kitchenware section. The Food Hall looked impressive selling lots of deli items and even every day foodstuffs.

They currently have no club / reward membership scheme at this garden centre.

DISABLED ACCESS
Good all round with wide paths. Where there are steps there is also an alternate ramp provided. There are no toilet facilities for the disabled.

OTHER STUFF
Car park - The main car park is on hard surface and level. The overflow car park is on grass.
Pet Centre - No live pets were sold although a good range of pet foods is available.
Aquatics - Yes, provided by Maidenhead Aquatics. A good selection of fish and all things to do with fish.
Water Features - A good range of water features, operative and attractively presented.
Sheds and Greenhouses - We saw no sheds but three greenhouses were on offer and well displayed.
Toilets - Basic but functional and clean.

There are disabled toilets, signage could be better.
