Podington is a small village three miles south of Wellingborough and it's always a surprise to find a large garden centre in such a rural setting. For Podington Garden Centre life began way back in 1976 as a plant and vegetable nursery and has undergone a series of developments into the large garden centre you see today. In 2013 it was bought by Wyevale Garden Centres

Serious design effort has been spent on the plants area with island beds and carefully arranged plant displays providing an attractive and engaging space. A far cry from many of the large garden centres who arrange their plants in long and boring rows. The arrangement of a plants area is made much simpler to maintain if the rows are straight and boring but it's at the cost of providing interest for the customer. So congratulations to Podington for going that extra mile to keep their customers happy.

There is not only a covered area immediately outside the main building but also a covered walkway which makes shopping for plants in the rain still a pleasant experience. Large umbrellas are available for those who have forgotten to bring their own. The choice of plants is huge, this is clearly a garden centre which really does put gardening ahead of gift shops. Not only will you find all the established favourites but also many more unusual plants. The choice of ornamental and fruit trees is particularly commendable. Older and more recent varieties of fruit trees are one particular area they excel at.

Shrubs, climbers, herbaceous plants, alpines, vegetables and herbs are all strongly featured. The choice of roses is extensive, to say the least. In season the bedding plants and hanging baskets are worth a visit on their own. Hardy plants are guaranteed for their life time. The signs around the plants are excellent, very necessary in an area of this size - you won't get lost! Staff are easy to find if you have any gardening questions and they are both approachable and knowledgeable.

Inside the choice is just as large with the main departments including a vast choice of garden and conservatory furniture from a variety of manufacturers. Garden accessories, barbecues, gifts, books, cards, wild bird care feeds and accessories and much more can be found attractively displayed and in a pleasant environment.

CHRISTMAS AT PODINGTON GARDEN CENTRE

Christmas is celebrated in style at Podingtons with the whole area undergoing major changes in mid October each year. They sell all the Christmas goodies you would expect including real and synthetic trees, decorations, lighting, garlands, seasonal gifts and food. The area has several centre piece displays which will delight kids and adults.

Santa makes an appearance in his grotto each year for the kids and his reindeer are parked outside for visitors to enjoy. The cafe also has a seasonal menu during the Christmas period with activities especially for the kids. We will post more information here as the Christmas season approaches, Christmas opening times are listed at the bottom of this page.

CHERRY TREE CAFE AT PODINGTON GARDEN CENTRE

The cafe has recently been refurbished and the menu redesigned. They cater for those looking for just a coffee and cakes through to those who want a hot main meal. Main meals are priced in the range £6 to £7 with a specials board that changes regularly. Snack meals include baked potatoes, toasted sandwiches, paninis and other savouries. Salads are strangely not on their main menu. Breakfasts are served up to 11.00, hot lunch meals 12.00 to 2.00. For those seeking a gluten free meal the choice is limited and you will need to ask the staff for what is available.

The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating areas.

The cafe was awarded a five star rating for food hygiene in August 2012 by Bedford Borough Council. Click here for the full report.
