OUR VIEWS ON HIRONS GARDEN CENTRE

The entrance to Hirons Garden Centre in Handsworth, Birmingham. Hirons Garden Centre in Handsworth, Birmingham is unashamedly aimed at providing value for money without any frills. We are very impressed with them.

All the niceties of many other garden centres are missing in order to keep costs to a minimum. The concept works well in this area of Birmingham.

THE PLANTS AREA AT HIRONS GARDEN CENTRE

Plants at Hirons Garden Centre Any thought that may originally have gone into designing a pleasant plants area has long been forgotten!

The plants are arranged on the floor in what appears to be a random order. There are no signs to indicate where particular plants can be found.

The paths are partly paved and beginning to sink unevenly in some areas. Definitely not a wheelchair friendly garden centre. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable so feel free to ask them a question.

Quite what the theme of this garden centre is not clear. Most of the plants are shrubs although you will find many ornamental and fruit trees and bedding plants in season. Despite the lack of presentation the majority of plants are in good condition. This garden centre majors on price. For example, rose bushes start at £5.99 compared to the normal £8.99 in many other garden centres. If price and plant quality are your key criteria then Hirons will satisfy your need admirably. Certainly, from our perspective this an excellent garden centre and the lack of presentation is not something which most gardeners will consider important considering the low prices.

INTERIOR SALES AREA
The interior shop area is equally chaotic and unorganised. It's a small area for a garden centre but should provide the basics for most gardens. Many items are available by weight and unpackaged, good news if you only want a small amount of an item. These unpackaged items provide great value for money. Pre-packaged and well known names differ little in price from other retail outlets.

One example of non-plant prices is the multi-purpose compost. Three bags (50 litres each) are available for £10, excellent value. There is also a good choice of healthy looking houseplants at very reasonable prices.

THE CAFE
There is no cafe at this garden centre.

CAR PARK
The car park is small but was adequate on the day we visited.

The garden centre and staff are abit untidy but the plants are fantastic value, and the staff really know there stuff. If you want a day out, with cream tea, a new fish rank and a selection if dog toys go somewhere else, this place is all about the plants which are reasonably priced and well grown specimens.

Really good service, good prices and prompt delivery.

5 star rating 13 April 2014 Comment From: Karmen

I have bought many plants from Hirons for nearly 20 years. Every single one of my plants remain strong and healthy to this day and I am returning today April 13th to purchase more for this year :)

5 star rating 25 March 2014 Comment From: Gill

No frills, no cons, I have never had a bad plant from here, staff know what they are talking about. Hedging plants for my sons garden in 'posh' garden center £90, Hirons £38.00, my first choice as a serious grower, not a day out.

5 star rating 27 February 2014 Comment From: Maureen Williams

Try going to b and q for horticultural grit or Orchid Compost or sand to mix with compost. Hirons sells the lot at very reasonable prices. I would not agree that it is unorganised. The staff are always very helpful and will always put what you buy into the car for you.
