OUR VIEWS ON HINTONS NURSERY
The owner of Hintons Nursery was not very happy with us doing a
review of it although we gained enough information to give you a
flavour of what this nursery can offer.
They specialise almost exclusively in plants with a limited amount
of composts available outside and some gardening sundries available
in the small shop.
The plants area is plainly laid out with about half of the paths
being paved and the remainder in loose gravel. Wheelchairs, both the
push type and electric ones are advertised as being available at the
entrance. The design is simple with no pretensions to make it
intricate or complicated. The plants are mainly held in wooden bays
which are slightly lower than normal.
The selection of plants is good, rivalling that at some medium sized
garden centres. On their website Hintons claim ' ... we also have
one of the largest ranges of plants for miles.'.This claim is true
with the nearest garden centres or nurseries to offer a similar
range being
Charlecote Garden Plants,
Stratford Garden
Centre and Russels Garden Centre near Coventry.
our brief inspection of the plants showed them to be in excellent
condition. The sell shrubs, roses, trees, herbaceous plants, herbs,
seasonal bedding - all the plants you would normally need. Being a
plant nursery they grow a significant proportion of their own
plants, over 70% of them. This has a huge advantage over bought-in
plants because you know that, at Hintons, the plants have been
raised and grown in the same climate as your own garden.
We didn't get a chance to do our normal price comparison because of
limited time but the owner admitted that the were not able to
compete with the large garden centres on price because larger garden
centres bought in far larger numbers. This was a remark which struck
us as at odds with our finding at other nurseries. Often the
nurseries undercut the "big boys" on price, sometimes substantially
so.
The owner stressed that one of Hintons chief advantages over many
other garden centres was the level of expertise their staff
possessed. They were well qualified to give good advice and were
more than willing to do so if requested.
The car park looks large enough to cope with a large number of cars
and is on generally solid ground and near to the entrance of the
garden centre.
