PLANTS AT HINTONS NURSERY AND PLANT CENTRE

SIZE OF PLANTS AREA: Small to medium

PLANT SELECTION: 2.5 star rating They specialise in slightly unusual plants, and giving advice. The majority of plants are grown on site rather than bought in. You may find that not all the plants you require are stocked at this nursery.

Our inspection of the plants showed them to be in good condition. The sell shrubs, roses, trees, herbaceous plants, herbs, seasonal bedding - all the plants you would normally need. Being a plant nursery they grow a significant proportion of their own plants, over 70% of them. This has a huge advantage over bought-in plants because you know that, at Hintons, the plants have been raised and grown in the same climate as your own garden.

LAYOUT: 2 stars Simplistic and basic layout. The main path is solid but the majority of surfaces are gravel.

The car park looks large enough to cope with a large number of cars and is on generally solid ground and near to the entrance of the garden centre.

VALUE FOR MONEY: 1.5 stars This very much depends on your view of life! Hintons are a not for profit organisation and any profit they make is ploughed back into local charities. If you don't mind paying relatively high prices knowing that, then good. But you do need to accept that the prices will be high.

We didn't get a chance to do our normal price comparison because of limited time but the owner admitted that the were not able to compete with the large garden centres on price because larger garden centres bought in far larger numbers. This was a remark which struck us as at odds with our finding at other nurseries. Often the nurseries undercut the "big boys" on price, sometimes substantially so.

The owner stressed that one of Hintons chief advantages over many other garden centres was the level of expertise their staff possessed. They were well qualified to give good advice and were more than willing to do so if requested.
