Blooms of Bressingham (ten branches) was acquired by Wyevale Garden Centres  in 2007 and the Worcester branch was part of that deal. The history of this garden centre goes back much further. It began life in 1923 as a small nursery owned by William Palmer selling fruit, vegetables and flowers.

William developed the nursery considerably over the next thirty years and it passed to his daughter Diana in the late 1950s. She developed the nursery into a fully fledged garden centre until it was bought by Blooms who developed it even further.

In common with many of the other Blooms Garden Centres, the staff were retained by Wyevale Garden Centres and it is a mark of their loyalty that many still work there today.

The plants on offer are varied and all in good condition though none are grown on site. Hardy plants come with a full five year guarantee. The plants area is arranged in plain fashion with straight, hard-surfaced and wide paths. The signs around the area are in general good. There are no particular specialist area as far as the plants are concerned however there are lots of them and the choice is good.

The inside sales space is disappointing to say the least. Yes they do sell garden accessories, gifts, outdoor furniture cards, barbecues and the like but the thought behind the displays is non-existent. Decor done on the cheap with worn out materials and simple errors in them. Take the display of boots below labelled "Garden Tools", it's typical of the store throughout. and what's that bit of wire hanging from the ceiling (click the picture to enlarge and see more clearly).

Interior of Blooms Worcester Garden Centre

Basic style interiors often have their place in plant nurseries where they grow their own plants and offer cheap prices and lots of personal service, indeed it can be part of the charm of places like that. However, this garden centre is owned by Wyevale Garden Centres and is in a reasonably prosperous city in the UK.

For those who do not like constant sales pitches over tannoys, stay away from this garden centre! I wandered around for about 20 minutes and there was a series of constant and annoying annoying sales messages about items they were trying to sell. In other areas there is music over the tannoys and at certain sales areas they have product reviews blaring out their message via small screen televisions. If you are unlucky, it is possible to hear all three at the same time in certain areas.

Maidenhead Aquatics have an excellent medium sized outlet which sell live fish of all types and all the tanks, filters and plants to go with them. Gardening goods make up a larger than normal proportion of the interior sales area with a good selection of cards, gifts, books, barbecues and of course garden furniture.

There are ladies and gents toilets at this garden centre with baby changing facilities. I visited the gents and although it was clean and functional it was also run down and in serious need of a good lick of paint.

Blooms at Worcester have their own club card scheme (Wyevale Garden Centres scheme) with various benefits for their members. Details of the club and a comparison with the clubs of other garden centres can be found by clicking here. If you are thinking of visiting this garden centre to make a purchase it may well be worth taking a look at their discounts and rewards.

THE CAFE AT BLOOMS WORCESTER GARDEN CENTRE

The cafe is another disappointment. The food is of variable quality and not value for money in our view. The drinks are also often not fresh, at least not our coffees, and can often taste bitter. The decor really is of a very low standard, poor quality seats and tables. The lighting fitments appear to have been taken from a 1960s discount store. Prices don't reflect the poor food quality and low standard of decoration, they are too high. The outdoor seating area has nine or so tables overlooking the main road and the exit of the garden centre, not very attractive at all.

The cafe gained the top five star food hygiene rating awarded by the Food Standards Agency in November 2012.
