When we write our more detailed reviews of a garden centre we first produce a template article with all the basic details in it. When creating that template we often phone the garden centre, prior to visiting, to clear up any questions we have. For Avon Mill Garden Centre we did just this and we asked them two questions.
Firstly, how were they able to open on Sundays from 9 to 5.30 when most garden centres are restricted by law to 10.30 to 4.30? They explained that the law only applied where the covered area of a garden centre was a certain size and they had the local Trading Standard people around and they confirmed the restriction did not apply to Avon Mill Garden Centre.
The second question we asked was about the claim on their website to be one of the Independent Newspaper's Top 50 garden centres. When we checked, we believed they were not on the 2012 or the 2011 list. They confirmed that this was true although they had won this accolade in either 2009 or 2010. Maybe they should update their website but even so, the accolade stands and is quite an achievement.
Plants are the heart of Avon Mill Garden Centre and they stock a large choice of shrubs, herbaceous plants, trees and seasonal bedding including lots of hanging baskets.
A major feature of this garden centre, plants aside, is food! They have a top quality cafe which serves everything from a cup of coffee to a selection of tasty main meals. It's all home cooked and it certainly tastes that way. If cafe food is not your choice then a visit to their deli will not disappoint. They source the food locally to keep costs down and maximise on taste.
Clearly the owners of the garden centre have a keen interest in art because a significant proportion of the sales area is given over to an art exhibition. The pictures on display change with the seasons to maintain interest.
One other service they offer, not usually found at garden centres, is the hosting of wedding receptions and they even have a licence for civil weddings. The idyllic setting of this garden centre combined with their undoubted catering abilities make this a good choice for a wedding.
